As of November 1st, 2021 I have not sent the letter (yet). I did manage to get a hold
of the office on October 27th and was told to call the police the next time I smell the dope coming
into my apartment. The assistant manager told us that "without proper documentation we can't do anything" --
so all the times I emailed them, called them, left voicemails, and visited the office in person weren't being documented? 🤔 Emails and voicemails that they ignored? What kind of crap is that?
Update #1 October 13th, 2021
I am going to send a certified letter to my landlord this weekend. Read it here
October 6th, 2021: I have been having a hard time with my downstairs
neighbor smoking up a storm. I have dubbed him "Dopehead" and
"Mr. Wonderful" for a touch of humor. Please enjoy at my expense. Send me Scooby Snacks if you can, these fumes are making ya girl hungry for some munchies!!!
Timeline of events (The Dope Smoke Log)
September 27th, 2021 (Monday): I went to the leasing office and talked to assistant manager, a gentleman and a lady, about the smoke smell in my apartment. The lady said she would tell the main managers about it when they come back from vacation.
Result: A few days later they put "no-smoking" flyers on every door in the building and Mr Pothead's door.
September 28th, 2021 (Tuesday): I called the office and left a voicemail asking for a follow-up.
Result: No call back.
September 29th, 2021 ( Wednesday): I called the office at 2:03pm because I was smelling weed coming through my air vents. I asked if they could send someone out to smell it for themselves.
Result: They put an individual "no-smoking" flyer on Mr. Pothead's door.
September 29th, 2021 (Wednesday) I smell weed coming through my air vents again at 10:40pm.
October 3rd, 2021 (Sunday): I smell cigarette smoke coming through my air vents around 9:30pm.
October 4th, 2021 (Monday): I faintly smell weed coming through my air vents at 8:59pm.
October 6th, 2021 (Wednesday): I smell weed coming through my air vents at 4:40pm. I went to the office immediately and spoke with the assistant manager again and told her I am smelling it again and asked to be moved when my lease ends. She says to check back in Feb 2022 to see what is available and that she will let Monica know about the smell again.
October 7th, 2021 (Thursday): I smell Mr. Wonderful tonight around 7:30pm. Seriously starting to think about moving!!
October 9th, 2021 (Saturday): I smell Dopesmoke coming through the air vents at 8:55pm and call the office to leave a very detailed message. I explained I appreciate their efforts in putting notices on Mr. Wonderful's door but that he is still smoking. I asked to be moved to a different unit.
October 10th, 2021 (Sunday): At 5:54pm I start smelling smoke again, this time it was pretty strong than it has been. I am interested to see what management does about my voicemail tomorrow. If nothing happens I will be going back down to speak with them, again.
Update: Tonight at 9:45pm I am smelling cigarette smoke coming in my vents. It is giving me a headache. The thunderstorms are not helping.
October 12th, 2021 (Tuesday): Around 9:53pm I started smelling very strong cigarette smoke coming through the air vents. It was so strong I had to shut off my A/C and wait 20-30minutes before turning it back on to wait for the smell to dissipate. When I woke up this morning (the 13th) my bedding smelled like stale cigarettes.
I have drafted a letter that I am going to print off at work tomorrow and will send via USPS certified mail to the office this weekend. I'm fed up!
October 27th, 2021 (Wednesday): A relative and I called the office and spoke with the assistant manager about the smoke issue. She told us that "sometimes it's better to just not say anything" -- in regards to us reporting the dope smoking neighbor.
She told us to call the police when we smell it again.
October 31st, 2021 (Sunday): Happy Halloween! Guess who? Yep. Smelled dope smoke in the afternoon and briefly in the evening when I came home.
Ignored Emails (that I have sent to the office about the smoke)
Ignored Email #1
"Good afternoon. This is Jess.
I didn't think this was super serious so I don't want to call and bother you but
lately at night around 10pm I notice a very strong cigarette odor coming from one of the
the air vents in my bedroom and it makes my throat and sinuses irritated.
The smells get all over my bedding too. I don't know exactly which vent it is coming from or if it is coming from all ven wondering what could be done about it.
It is very strong and is hard to sleep at night."
Ignored Email #2
"Good morning, I know this is Sunday but I am hoping you see this message Monday.
For the past couple of weeks I have been smelling marijuana and cigarette smoke coming in through the vents in my
bathroom and bedroom. It comes in very strongly and smells as if someone is smoking right there in my apartment.
I have come home from work smelling heavy cigarette smoke in my living room. It is
getting colder at night and I think whoever it is is trying to smoke in their apartment but it is coming into mine.
One of my pets has asthma and had an attack this morning from the smell.
I know you have sent flyers out urging residents to not smoke and I am extremely appreciative of the efforts.
I am not sure if the smell is coming from the person downstairs or upstairs from me. I am not looking forward to the colder months
and having to breathe in somebody else's bad habit. My mother died from lung cancer
so it is a very personal issue to me. I hope something can be done. Thank you for all you do. Jessica"
Both of these emails were completely ignored. I did my best to be kind and
PC in both of my messages. I have also called the office a few times and left voicemails, which of course,
were ignored too. I don't know if it is just bad management or if they are super busy all the time
or if they are deliberately ignoring my attempts to contact them about the issue. Either way
I find it unprofessional when their lease specifically states smoking is not allowed inside the buildings.
